Our Grand Road Trip has come to an end. We have returned, healthy and happy to our humble abode. The boys are friggin' amazing travellers! We logged over 3000 miles from Maine to Annapolis, down to North Carolina, back up to New Jersey and eventually back to Maine.
And honestly, we had a great time. But as always, its so good to be home.
The following are some insights gleaned from our days on the road. They are in no particular order. Enjoy!
1. 99 bottles of beer on a wall will not get you through the last 25 miles when sung at 70 mph. You might get 20 miles if you're lucky.
2. According to Sparky, Days Inn is a pretty fancy hotel. According to Mom, any hotel that has a vacancy when you have three exceptionally tired boys in a car and all the other hotels in a 20 mile radius are full, is not only fancy, but a Blessing from Above.
3. There is nothing fun about taking a much-needed dinner break in a "real" restaurant when you are travelling alone with three children under the age of five. Especially if one of them is 16 months old. It doesn't matter how tired you are of fast food. McDonalds or BK are much wiser choices. Make note of it for future travels.
4. Next time I drive through the Shenendoah Valley and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I'm stopping to see the Caves and the Amish. I've passed them twice now, and I'll be darned if I miss them again.
5. When Yahoo maps says its a six hour drive. They're lying. Its 9.
6. Visiting cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and old family friends really is a wonderful way to spend the summer and make memories that will last a lifetime.
7. According to Catfish, it isn't really fishing if the fish you catch aren't big enough to eat for dinner.
8. Trying to take seven boys under the age of seven to a swimming pool, with only two mommies to supervise, is a lesson in insanity.
9. My boys have grown up so much this summer. Sparky can whistle and ride on the swingset by himself. Catfish has learned to chew gum like a champ and was bold enough to take on the slide at the pool all on his own. Roomba (who needs a new nickname by the way) is practically running to keep up with the other two. *sigh* there are so many long, slow days and yet it is so very, very fast.
10. I cannot say enough about the wonders of a DVD player in the car.
